George’s varying experiences as a young man showed up in his short stories, early articles and his novel, Fisherman’s Beach. His experience in the merchant marine, and working on an oar boat on the Great Lakes was a big part of his life. Here is an early article for the Milwaukee Journal which shows George’s journalistic skills in laying out the facts.  But it also shows his literary talent of telling a philosophical story as well as the journalistic story.
