Part 1 of a Three Part Interview with Sigurd Olson:  

George drove up to Ely, Minnesota with his daughter Martha, and spent time talking to Sigurd about the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.  The result was a three-part series in the Capital Times.  Just over a year after the series appeared Sigurd’s efforts were rewarded when Jimmy Carter signed the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) Act on October 21, 1978.

    Thank you so much for this great website. Over the years, I greatly enjoyed George’s writing and just the sound of his voice as he read his annual “Last Letters from Stalingrad” on WIBA.
    I especially enjoyed the interviews with Sigurd Olson regarding the struggles to safeguard wilderness if for no other reason than for their spiritual value to the human soul. As we see now, the BWCA is again under attack from mining interests intent on tunneling under the lakes to extract silver. It seems to be a battle that must be continually fought. I’ll be revisiting this website often.
